Prototype #54

plaster, 54’ Cadillac headlights & taillights

42” x 20” x 18”

Created in early 2022, Prototype #54 is a sculptural memory of a 1954 Cadillac, a car owned by my father during my adolescent years. In the same way memories are reduced overtime to their most salient and impactful details, this memory has evolved or devolved into a more simple biomorphic form. The work functions as an infant's vision of her mother, where eyes, hands, and breasts are isolated out for their dominant and essential properties. In this case, as a sort of preformed homunculus, it represents the distorted retrospective lens through which a son sees his father. As the caretaker of this car when I was a teen I have a strong haptic memory of its curves, lines, and surfaces. The work simultaneously retains those memories while putting to rest some of the nostalgias they once held.
