9 Standard Stoppages is a caricature of the US Supreme Court as seen through the lens of AI. When prompted to generate “hex codes” (six character coding for standardized color forumalas) AI produced results, often with caveats like, “I don't have access to real-time or specific data such as the current skin tones of the Supreme Court Justices or their paint formulas. Additionally, providing such information could be considered sensitive or inappropriate. If you're interested in a broader discussion on paint colors or any other topic, feel free to ask!” But when pushed, a list of hex codes, rgb codes, and various formula percentages were generated. The resulting series of vertical bars painted with a standard paint roller are extractions of the most predominantly suggested tones. The path of selecting from the algorithmic output of hues mirrors the complexity and obvious inaccuracy and even fallacy of a hyper-amalgamated information system of judgement. The bars may claim some degree of precision in depicting heights of each of the current justices. The title, 9 Standard Stoppages, is a direct lift from Marcel Duchamp’s 3 Standard Stoppages where he dropped three 1 meter lengths of string from a height of 1 meter, traced the line of the string, and crafted three measuring sticks using that random line.
